The Prose Unit

     Prose refers to any kind of writing that is governed by the sentence and paragraph rather than the poetic line. The Prose Appreciation Unit involves the study of essays so that students will come to an understanding of how different essays are written as well as gain an appreciation of the intellectual arguments raised within them.

LEARNING GOALS:

 

  • critical evaluation of various essay models (Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Expository Comparison/Contrast, Cause and Effect) by identifying key elements of informal essay writing with a focus on how these elements contribute to clear and effective writing

 

  • literary analysis of unity, coherence, and emphasis (i.e. rhetorical Devices) to demonstrate insight into how they help communicate meaning

 

  • concise and clear informal essay writing by producing an informal essay
